About the Role

This is a key leadership opportunity within the prison education environment at HMP Wormwood Scrubs. As the Vocational Assistant Manager, you will play a central role in shaping, managing and improving the vocational curriculum delivered to learners in custody.

Prison education is a vital part of rehabilitation, enabling individuals to develop skills, achieve qualifications and build confidence that supports their successful resettlement. Education providers across England deliver over two million hours of face‑to‑face learning each year, helping learners progress through vocational and academic pathways.

In this management role, you will lead a team of tutors to deliver high‑quality, industry‑aligned vocational learning that meets the needs of both learners and employers. You will also champion quality improvement, drive innovation and support staff performance to achieve positive learner outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, quality and performance of the vocational curriculum.
  • Support the Education Manager in the effective operational management of the education department.
  • Oversee learner induction, class allocation and day‑to‑day learner management across vocational areas.
  • Drive continuous improvement through quality assurance, performance monitoring and innovative problem‑solving.
  • Develop strong internal and external partnerships that benefit learners' skills development and progression.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and line management to teaching and support staff.
  • Set and monitor performance targets aligned with curriculum priorities and wider contractual outcomes.
  • Promote high standards in teaching, learning and assessment to maximise learner achievement, retention and satisfaction.

What We're Looking For

  • Level 5 or above teaching qualification.
  • Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance, or willingness to work towards it.
  • Proven commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage an achievement‑focused team.
  • Experience managing curriculum development, quality systems and staff performance.
  • Clear knowledge of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF) and ability to meet required standards.
  • Significant teaching experience within vocational or further education.
  • Ability to drive innovation, implement improvements and influence others effectively.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
  • A full driving licence and access to your own transport (essential).
