"Making a Difference: In Conversation with Education Hero Nominee Dean Lloyd"

At The Protocol Group, making a difference isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we see every day through the people we work with and the partnerships we build.

That’s why we’re incredibly proud to have been recognised at this year’s Education Awards, with Dean Lloyd shortlisted for Education Hero and The Protocol Group nominated for Transforming Lives Through Partnerships, ahead of the awards evening on 3rd July.

Dean’s work sits at the heart of what we do - connecting education and employment, supporting students to build confidence, and creating opportunities that can genuinely change futures.

In this interview, we speak to Dean about his reaction to the nomination, what being an ‘Education Hero’ means to him, and the role partnerships play in creating lasting impact across the education sector.

How did it feel to find out you'd been nominated for Education Hero?

Honestly, I was quite surprised. I never do what I do for awards or recognition, so to be nominated by people who have seen the work first-hand means a lot. The biggest reward for me is seeing a student gain confidence, secure an opportunity, or achieve something they didn't think was possible. To be recognised for that is really special.

What was your first reaction when you heard The Protocol Group had also been nominated?

I wasn't surprised at all. Every day I see the effort the team puts into supporting colleges, employers and candidates. We're not just filling vacancies or delivering workshops; we're building relationships and creating opportunities. It's great to see the company recognised for the impact it has across the education sector.

Can you tell us a bit about your role at The Protocol Group and what your day-to-day looks like?

My role is all about connecting education and employment. I work closely with colleges, students and employers to help create meaningful opportunities. One day I might be delivering employability workshops, supporting students with interviews and confidence building, and the next I could be working with employers to create pathways into work. No two days are ever the same, and that's what I enjoy most.

What does being an 'Education Hero' mean to you personally?

For me, it means making a genuine difference to someone's future. Education isn't just about qualifications; it's about confidence, aspiration and helping people see what's possible. If I've helped a student believe in themselves or take that next step, that's what matters most to me.

What part of your work are you most proud of?

The relationships I build with students. I love seeing someone go from being nervous about speaking to employers or attending an interview, to walking into a room full of confidence. Knowing I've played a small part in that journey is probably what I'm most proud of.

Can you share a moment where you felt you really made a difference to someone's career or journey?

There have been quite a few, but one that always stands out is when a student tells me they've secured a job, apprenticeship or progression opportunity after initially believing they weren't good enough. Sometimes all someone needs is a bit of encouragement, guidance and someone to believe in them. Seeing that transformation is incredible.

What motivates you to go above and beyond in your role?

The students. Every young person has potential, but not every young person has the same opportunities, confidence or support network. Knowing that something I do today could positively impact someone's future is what motivates me. Whether it's helping someone prepare for an interview, introducing them to an employer, or simply giving them the confidence to believe in themselves, those moments matter. I genuinely believe every young person deserves someone in their corner who believes in them, and if I can be that person, then that's what drives me to go the extra mile.

What do you think sets your approach apart from others in the industry?

I try to keep things real. Students can tell very quickly when someone is being genuine. I focus on sharing real experiences, practical advice and honest conversations about the world of work. I want students to leave my sessions feeling inspired but also equipped with skills they can actually use.

What do you think makes The Protocol Group stand out as a partner in education?

The genuine commitment to making a difference. We don't just work with education providers; we work alongside them. We take time to understand their challenges, their students and their goals so we can create solutions that have a lasting impact.

Can you talk about how partnerships play a role in transforming lives?

No one organisation can do it alone. When colleges, employers and organisations like The Protocol Group work together, we create opportunities that wouldn't otherwise exist. Those partnerships help students gain experience, build networks and access careers they may never have considered before.

Are there any standout partnerships or success stories you're particularly proud of?

I'm particularly proud of the partnerships where we've been able to engage students who might not normally put themselves forward. Seeing students gain confidence, attend employer events, complete mock interviews and move into employment or further opportunities shows the power of working together.

How does the team work together to deliver great outcomes for clients and candidates?

Everyone genuinely cares about what they do. There's a real culture of collaboration and support. People are always willing to share ideas, help each other and go the extra mile to ensure clients, colleges and candidates receive the best possible experience.

What does 'transforming lives' look like in real terms through your work?

Transforming lives isn't always one big moment. Sometimes it's helping a student believe in themselves for the first time. Sometimes it's supporting someone into employment or helping them discover a career path they never knew existed. Those small moments can have a huge impact on someone's future.

How would you describe the culture at The Protocol Group?

Supportive, passionate and people-focused. Everyone shares the same goal of making a positive difference. There's a real sense of teamwork and a willingness to help each other succeed.

How does the team support each other to achieve success?

We share knowledge, celebrate each other's successes and step in to help whenever needed. There's a real understanding that when one person succeeds, the whole team succeeds.

What does it mean to you to be part of a business that's been recognised in this way?

It's something to be really proud of. Recognition like this reflects the hard work, commitment and passion of everyone across the business. It's fantastic to see that effort acknowledged.

How do you hope to continue making an impact in the education sector?

I'd like to continue building stronger links between education and industry, helping more students develop the skills, confidence and networks they need to succeed. The more opportunities we can create, the greater the impact we can have.

What would winning either of these awards mean to you and the team?

It would be an incredible achievement and a reflection of the impact we've had together. More importantly, it would shine a spotlight on the importance of supporting students, building partnerships and creating opportunities that genuinely change lives.

Is there anything else you'd like to say to the team, clients, or candidates who have supported you?

Just a huge thank you. To the colleges, employers, students and my colleagues at The Protocol Group, thank you for trusting us and working with us. The impact we make is only possible because of those partnerships. Every success story belongs to all of us, and I'm grateful to be part of that journey.
