Carpentry Tutor (Prison Education)

📍 Location: HMYOI Werrington
💼 Contract: Permanent
💰 Salary: From £30,000

Build Skills. Build Confidence. Build Futures.

Are you a skilled carpenter or trades professional ready for something more rewarding?

This is your chance to step away from the day-to-day and use your expertise to help others build a better future. As a Carpentry Tutor, you'll support learners in developing practical skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose-giving them tools that extend far beyond the workshop.

New to Prison Education? Here's What You Should Know

It's completely natural to feel uncertain about working in this environment-but many who take the step find it to be one of the most fulfilling roles of their career.

  • Supportive and structured setting - with experienced staff and clear processes
  • Small group sizes - allowing you to give each learner real attention
  • Hands-on teaching - focused on practical skills, not paperwork-heavy delivery
  • Real impact - see progress and personal growth every single day

You don't need prison experience-just patience, professionalism, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

The Role

Based on-site, you'll deliver practical carpentry training to small groups of learners, helping them develop industry-relevant skills, knowledge, and positive behaviours.

You'll create a workshop environment that is engaging, structured, and supportive-helping learners not only gain vocational ability but also confidence and direction.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Deliver hands-on carpentry training to small groups
  • Develop structured training plans tailored to learner needs
  • Support learners in working towards long-term goals and employment pathways
  • Use a variety of teaching methods to keep sessions engaging and practical
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and encouragement to help learners progress
  • Maintain a safe workshop environment and promote good working practices
  • Work alongside colleagues to ensure a high-quality learning experience

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is passionate about their trade and ready to share their skills in a meaningful way.

Essential

  • Level 2 vocational qualification in Carpentry or a related trade
  • Strong hands-on experience and expertise in your field
  • Experience delivering vocational or practical training
  • Ability to engage and motivate learners with different backgrounds and abilities

Desirable

  • Teaching or assessing qualification (e.g. AET, TAQA)
  • Experience within education, training, or apprenticeships
  • Experience supporting learners with additional needs

No teaching qualification? No problem.
We'll support you in gaining the qualifications you need as part of your role.

What You'll Gain

  • 🌟 The opportunity to make a lasting and visible difference
  • 🔧 A role that keeps you connected to your trade in a practical way
  • 📚 Funded teaching and assessing qualifications
  • 🤝 A supportive team environment
  • 📈 Opportunities to grow your career in education and training

Why This Role Matters

Many learners come into education with little confidence and limited opportunities. By teaching carpentry, you're giving them a practical skill they can use to build a future-whether that's employment, further training, or simply a renewed belief in themselves.

Your work helps individuals move forward in a positive direction-benefiting not just them, but the wider community too.

Apply Today

If you're ready to take your skills in a new direction and be part of something truly meaningful, we'd love to hear from you.
