Working within a prison education environment, you will deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths and English lessons while providing cover across the curriculum as required, ensuring continuity of learning and high-quality educational provision. The Role As a Functional Skills Cover Tutor, you will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills qualifications from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2 , supporting learners with a wide range of educational backgrounds, abilities, and learning needs. You will use innovative teaching methods, adaptive learning strategies, and digital resources to make Maths and English accessible, relevant, and engaging for all learners. Key Responsibilities Teaching & Learning Deliver Functional Skills Maths and/or English qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2. Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive, and learner-focused lessons. Create a positive learning environment that promotes confidence, participation, and achievement. Differentiate teaching methods to support varying learning styles and abilities. Embed employability, digital literacy, and personal development into lessons. Use a range of teaching strategies to motivate and engage learners. Provide cover across Functional Skills provision as required. Assessment & Progress Conduct initial assessments and utilise BKSB diagnostics to identify learner starting points. Develop, monitor, and review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs). Track learner progress and maintain accurate records. Deliver formative and summative assessments. Provide constructive feedback to support continuous improvement. Prepare learners for examinations and qualification achievement. Learner Support Support learners with additional learning needs and reasonable adjustments. Promote literacy, numeracy, and reading for pleasure across the learning environment. Encourage confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude towards learning. Support learners in setting realistic educational and career goals. Work collaboratively with learner support teams to remove barriers to achievement. Quality & Compliance Maintain accurate learner records, attendance registers, and assessment documentation. Ensure teaching meets awarding body and organisational requirements. Support quality assurance activities, including observations and audits. Promote safeguarding, equality and diversity, Prevent, and health & safety practices at all times. Teamwork & Development Work closely with colleagues, prison staff, support practitioners, and employability teams. Participate in staff meetings, training, and continuing professional development activities. Contribute to curriculum improvement and the sharing of best practice. Support wider departmental needs where required. What We're Looking For Essential Level 3 qualification in Maths and English. Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one. Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths and/or English qualifications. Strong lesson planning, classroom management, and learner engagement skills. Experience supporting learners with diverse educational needs. Excellent communication, organisational, and administrative abilities. Experience maintaining ILPs, learner records, and progress tracking documentation. Knowledge of safeguarding, equality and diversity, and health & safety requirements. A genuine passion for helping learners succeed and achieve meaningful outcomes. Desirable Experience within prison education, adult learning, further education, or employability programmes. Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic assessment tools. Knowledge of OFSTED's Education Inspection Framework (EIF). Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification, or willingness to work towards one.
