Associate Professor in Computer Science

The institution is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in Software Engineering, Machine Learning and Python Programming. Applications are also welcomed from candidates in other areas of Computer Science who can contribute to core teaching and interdisciplinary activity.
The role
You will deliver engaging and inclusive teaching through lectures, seminars, workshops, practical sessions and online learning. You will design learning materials and assessments, explain complex technical concepts clearly and support students with different levels of prior knowledge.
Teaching should reflect current developments within computing and make effective use of digital technologies. The post is primarily focused on teaching and scholarship, although candidates with interests in next-generation software, artificial intelligence, human-centred AI, data, sustainability or ethics are encouraged to apply.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver Computer Science teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Contribute to Software Engineering, Machine Learning, Python Programming and related modules.
- Design lectures, workshops, practical activities and assessments.
- Provide constructive and timely feedback.
- Support student progress and act as a personal tutor where required.
- Supervise projects, dissertations and applied technical work.
- Contribute to programme development and curriculum enhancement.
- Participate in moderation, assessment boards and academic quality processes.
- Use suitable technologies within learning, teaching and assessment.
- Collaborate with colleagues across computing and related disciplines.
- Contribute to scholarship, professional practice or research.
- Maintain current subject and industry knowledge.
- Promote an inclusive learning environment.
Person specification
For Assistant Professor level, applicants should normally hold, or be close to completing, a relevant PhD, or demonstrate equivalent professional experience.
Candidates should have strong technical knowledge and the ability to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level. They should be confident delivering teaching both in person and online.
For Associate Professor level, candidates should also demonstrate an established record of teaching excellence, curriculum development, academic leadership, scholarship, research or professional contribution. Experience of mentoring colleagues, leading modules or programmes, or supporting academic quality enhancement would be valuable.
Essential criteria
- A relevant PhD completed or nearing completion, or equivalent professional expertise.
- Strong knowledge of Computer Science or a related discipline.
- Teaching competence at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Expertise in Software Engineering, Machine Learning, Python Programming or another relevant area.
- The ability to design innovative and inclusive learning activities.
- Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.
- Confidence teaching face-to-face and online.
- Strong IT, organisational and time-management skills.
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- A clear commitment to professional development and student success.
Desirable experience
Experience of UK higher education, Fellowship of Advance HE, project supervision, programme validation, academic quality assurance, teaching international students or relevant industry practice would be advantageous. Scholarship, research or interdisciplinary teaching experience would also be welcomed.
