We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Carpentry Tutor to join our education team at HMP Brixton. This rewarding role offers the opportunity to teach practical trade skills while making a genuine difference to learners' lives through education and rehabilitation.

Working with small groups of adult learners, you will deliver engaging, hands-on Carpentry training, helping individuals develop industry-relevant skills and behaviours that can support successful employment opportunities upon release.

The Role

As a Carpentry Tutor, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality vocational training within a workshop environment, ensuring learners remain engaged, motivated, and supported throughout their learning journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver practical and theory-based Carpentry & Joinery sessions.
  • Teach learners industry-standard techniques, safe working practices, and trade knowledge.
  • Plan and deliver structured lessons that meet curriculum and awarding body requirements.
  • Assess learner progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Support learners in achieving vocational qualifications and personal development goals.
  • Create a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Adapt teaching methods to meet a range of learning styles and abilities.
  • Maintain workshop equipment, tool inventories, and health & safety standards.
  • Complete learner records, assessments, progress reviews, and related documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and support teams to maximise learner success.

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Level 2 qualification (or above) in Carpentry & Joinery or a related construction trade.
  • Significant industry experience within Carpentry and/or Joinery.
  • Strong practical skills and up-to-date industry knowledge.
  • Experience delivering training, coaching, mentoring, apprenticeships, or vocational learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to engage, motivate, and support learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to helping individuals develop skills, confidence, and employability.

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification (AET, PTLLS, CET, DTLLS, PGCE or equivalent).
  • Assessor qualification (TAQA, A1, D32/D33 or equivalent).
  • Experience working in adult education, apprenticeship training, prison education, or employability programmes.
  • Knowledge of vocational qualifications and learner assessment processes.

If you do not currently hold a teaching or assessing qualification, support may be available to help you gain the required qualifications as part of your professional development.
